Description
Returning to the RNCM as artists-in-residence for the 23/24 season, Manchester Collective open their eclectic series with Different Trains, an ‘exhilarating journey through time and memory’ inspired by minimalist composer Steve Reich’s childhood recollections of various railway journeys.
Through a sinuous fusion of field recordings, spoken word and a live score, Reich’s work vividly renders the experiential breadth of locomotive travel, from leisurely day-trippers to the horrors of the Holocaust, in a piece Pitchfork labels ‘as much terror as it is music’.
